Ashford-Emmaville TSR

Ninna-walla - a Place of Many Grasstrees

This TSR is part of a corridor that runs from Mcintyre Falls in the west to Lemon Tree Flat, to the 3 Mile Bridge over the Severn River at Ashford, along the TSR. itself to Emmaville and thence to Torrington in the east - a distance of 50 kilometres.

Ashord-Emmaville TSRThe TSR is relatively undisturbed by neighbour leasing and only occasionly travelled by stock. It has varied habitat – Ironbark, Box, Pine, and open areas of Grasstrees. It benefits from a buffer zone formed by the Severn River Reserve which protects the catchment of the Pindari Dam.

90 species of birds (including a Regent Honeyeater nesting), spiders, reptiles, insects and numerous plant species have been listed on the TSR. The records are sent to interested groups - Citizens Wildlife Corridors Armidale, the National Parks Association of NSW, Birds Australia and the Regional Manager of Livestock Health and Pest Authority at Glen Innes .

Archaeologist Liza Duncan has discovered burial sites and middens along the Route and plants providing bush tucker. (TSRs often followed the pathways of aboriginal people.)

The name Ninna-walla is appropriate for this Stockroute as it is the aboriginal name for a Place of Many Grasstrees .Two species occur glauca and australis throughout the forest. Many uses were made of this fascinating plant in time past: e.g. long leaves for weaving & its exuded resin to fix spearheads. Now Diamond Firetails nest in the fronds.

Firewood collection remains a concern. We hope to erect signs encouraging folk to join us in the protection of the TSR. We are aware of the advance of the introduced Coolatai Grass and with continuing working bees hope to prevent its spread into significant areas .

We are extremely grateful for the detailed plant listings of Dr John Hunter, and the enthusiasm of Peter Croft & Rangers Michael Beyer and Andrew Davidson of Livestock Health and Pest Authority. The Friends of the Klori TSR made a most generous donation of $500 towards the cost of signs.
